With its majestic red rocks set against a backdrop of clear, spacious blue skies that seem to go on forever, it’s no wonder why so many have chosen to call Sedona home. Lured by its scenic surroundings and near-idyllic quality of life, retirees and families looking for a retreat from city life have been flocking to Sedona, creating a building boom the likes of which area native Matt Cavanaugh has never seen before. In fact, when this year comes to a close, Cavanaugh, owner of Cavanaugh Construction, will have completed 30 homes, making 1994 his busiest year ever.

Over the years, Cavanaugh Construction has built an enviable reputation as one of Sedona’s premier custom home and commercial builders. So what’s behind Cavanaugh Construction’s astounding success? According to Cavanaugh, it’s a commitment to quality, value and customer service. "I build every house as though I am building it for myself," he said.

Cavanaugh says that another important contributing factor to his company’s success is that there is always at least one model home on display in area subdivisions so prospective clients can see for themselves the quality details and upgraded features that are the hallmark of a Cavanaugh home. The fully decorated models help customers envision what their own home may look like, which Cavanaugh says is a key selling point. "Customers like the fact that they can see what they are getting," he commented.

Cavanaugh’s homes are noted for their quality details and abundant standard features that are considered options by many other builders. "We offer a quality product at a reasonable price, he said. "Our customers get a lot of value for the dollar they spend with us."

Cavanaugh’s extensive list of standard features includes ceramic tile kitchen counters, oak customer cabinets, pull-outs and tilt-outs in kitchen cabinets, heat lamps in bathrooms, built-in closet shelving with shoe racks, rounded wall corners, decorative glass block windows, central vacuum systems, built-in work bench in garages, Spanish tile roof and prewiring for security systems. In addition, Cavanaugh homes include many energy-efficient features, such as ceiling fans in all bedrooms and living room, upgraded R-38 ceiling insulation, R-21 wall insulation and R-19 garage insulation and high-efficiency furnaces.

Most of the homes built by Cavanaugh Construction range in size form 1,500 to 6,000 square feet. All homes are either customized from existing plans or completely custom designed to best capture the magnificent views Sedona offers and suit the lifestyle of the client.

Cavanaugh Construction’s two full-time designers utilize a state-of-art-computer aided design system for fast, efficient custom plan design. "By using the latest, state-of-art-computer system and high-speed plotters, we are able to do in a matter hours what would take days to do by hand," Cavanaugh explained. The CAD system allows designers to make changes easily, like moving walls with a click of a button. In addition, drawings can be printed to any scale so that they can easily be faxed to customers for their review.

Cavanaugh Construction makes use of as many technological advances as possible to increase efficiency. "Computers are very important in our business," Cavanaugh said. "We have computerized everything from accounting and payroll to estimating, scheduling and design. Everyone in the office has a computer and laser printer at their desk with all the appropriate software necessary to do their jobs efficiently." In addition, high-tech tools like laser levels and electronic range finders are used to assist in doing plot plans and laying out homes. To expedite communication, pagers, cellular phones and two-way radios are issued to employees. "We are constantly researching new and better ways to satisfy our customers as well as new and better tools to help us serve them more effectively," he noted.

Even with all their advanced equipment, Cavanaugh says it wouldn't be possible to build such high quality homes without the highly skilled and experienced craftsmen and subcontractors he employs. "Our people out in the field have spent many years perfecting their skills, and their level of craftsmanship shows in the attention to detail that is a part of every home we build."

Customer service is another very important part of Cavanaugh’s business. "Throughout the building process and even after the home is completed, we do whatever it takes to keep every customer satisfied," Cavanaugh stated. The company has a full-time service technician and fully equipped truck that are quickly dispatched should a problem arise.

Judging by the number of repeat customers, Cavanaugh Construction is certainly doing something right. "We do a good job. That is why so many customers come back to us when they are ready to build another home," Cavanaugh relayed. Customers have so much trust in the abilities of Matt Cavanaugh and his talented team, in fact, that several have chosen to let Cavanaugh Construction build homes for them even though they were not in the state of Arizona during the process.

First-time and repeat customers also appreciate the high level of professionalism shown by all members of his staff throughout the entire building process, which Cavanaugh attributes to the caliber of his employees. "I believe in having the right people in the right positions. Cavanaugh Construction is very fortunate to have so many highly skilled, experienced employees who are very good at what they do."

Cavanaugh, whose construction career dates back to high school when he worked weekends and summers for various home builders, says he has always been interested in the construction industry. But it was while he was in college that Cavanaugh decided that construction, and custom home building in particular, was the career he wanted to pursue, and he has been enjoying building ever since. "I most enjoy the pride I get from constructing a quality home that the owners are very happy with and that complements and harmonizes with the beauty of the area," he said.
